Kay Wigton

kay wigtonKay’s physician father introduced her to golf when she was eight years old when she would join him on Sunday afternoons on the course. Both she had her husband, the late Dr. Ted Wigton, were passionate about the game of golf and her family of four children inherited their enthusiasm for the sport.

Kay competed in many tournaments over the years across the state of Ohio, but she was proudest of winning the Marion Country Club Championship on four occasions (1978, 1979, 1984, and 1987). A member of Marion Country Club since 1969, she served many years on its Golf Committee and was three-time chairperson of its 18-Hole Ladies Golf Association. She was a member of the Women’s Ohio State Golf Association and the Ladies District Golf Association.

In 1976 Kay Wigton and Andy Fischer, a Dayton golf professional, founded the Ohio Junior Girls’ Championship and it has been held annually at Marion Country Club. This tournament will celebrate its 30th anniversary in July of 2006.

Kay passed away in 1998 from injuries sustained in an auto accident while on her way home from a golf tournament at Oberlin Country Club. She used the same putter during her entire golfing career and it was well over sixty years old when she passed away.
