Martha Martin

martha martinMartha served on the WOSGA Board of Directors from 1971 to 1981 and was instrumental in Belmont Hills Country Club hosting two WOSGA championships. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg that is her service to women’s golf.

She was appointed to the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship Committee in 1968 and served on this committee for fifteen years. During that time, she witnessed such LPGA greats as Nancy Lopez, Amy Alcott, Hollis Stacy, and Heather Farr win their national titles.

From 1978 through 1990, Martha was a member of the USGA Women’s Committee. This committee conducts the U.S. Women’s Open and the Women’s Amateur Championship each year as well as the Curtis Cup Matches and Women’s World Amateur Team Championships when held in this country.
From 1982 to 1986, she was chairman of the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship Committee, awarding the Championship Trophy to such LPGA notables as Heather Farr and Dannielle Ammaccapane during that time.

During 1986 and 1987 Martha served on the USGA Publinks Golf Committee and in 1989 was instrumental in organizing the USGA Women’s Regional Affairs Committee and served on this committee until 1992. Committee members serve as liaisons between the Women’s Committee and women’s state and regional golf associations, grassroots women golfers, and national women’s tournament organizations.

In 1995 Martha received the Ike Grainger Award by USGA Vice-President Judy Bell in appreciation of her 25 years of dedicated service to the USGA. In 1996, she rejoined the USGA family with an appointment to the USGA Senior Women’s Committee.

There are 50 committees in the United States Golf Association. All committee members serve voluntarily and without compensation of any sort.

Committee members do so because of their love for the game and for the opportunity to “give something back” to the game. Ironically, Martha Martin was not a golfer!
